Impact of ver+ beca tech in Peru: a look through Alondra's voice

By: Alondra Obregón and Daniela Hoyos

ver+ beca tech in Peru shows its value when you look at the journeys of the students who receive it. The testimony of Alondra Obregón, a scholar from the first cohort, clearly reflects what this opportunity makes possible: accessing a high-quality private university, advancing in a demanding technology degree, developing skills that are essential today, and having an environment that supports academic and personal growth from day one. Her experience captures what we hope this scholarship sparks in every student: real changes, real options, and a path that wasn’t accessible before.

What changes have you seen in your academic, personal, or family life since becoming part of ver+ beca tech?

Being part of ver+ beca tech has brought many changes to my life. I’ve learned to trust myself more and to recognize what I’m capable of. I’ve discovered which habits and methods work for me, instead of trying to follow the ones that are “supposed” to work for everyone. I’ve also met wonderful people who will become an important part of my university experience. In addition, I’ve learned many things I never imagined I would. In short, being part of ver+ beca tech has been a growth opportunity that I’m grateful to have, and I hope it lasts a long time.

What opportunities or new skills have emerged for you thanks to this opportunity?

Thanks to this opportunity, I’ve been able to study at a university that actively incorporates AI into its work so that we can learn to use it as an advantage instead of seeing it as a threat to the field I want to work in. I’ve also gained skills mainly related to programming, since before entering the university I only had very basic knowledge. Now, I can say that I perform much better in that area. Similarly, I’ve strengthened my mathematical and analytical skills, which are essential for my degree.

How has your program (Data Science) influenced your goals and the way you view the future?

The Data Science program has greatly influenced how I see the future because, even though it’s one of the most in-demand careers today, it’s also highly competitive due to the wide range of skills required. This has shaped how I want to continue my studies. Once I finish my degree, I plan to keep training to strengthen the skills I’ve developed so I can aim for a well-known company and a job in Data Science that I truly enjoy—one that allows me to have fun while working in the field I want to grow in.

What message would you give a young person who might receive this opportunity in the next cohort?

First, I’d tell them that even if they’re scared, don’t let fear control you—it only means you’re facing something big that could be yours. Second, if the opportunity came into your life, be happy, because out of so many people, YOU were selected. Third, don’t let yourself be carried away by what others may say; if you want that degree, that university, and that scholarship, it’s okay, because the decision is yours—you’re the only one who gets to choose what you will do with your future. And lastly, do it for yourself. Don’t do it to be better than someone else; do it to be better than your past self—the version of you who might not have dared to fight and reach where you are now.

What has it meant for you to be part of ver+ beca tech and to study at UTEC?

Studying at UTEC was one of my biggest goals since 2023, but I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I started looking for scholarships and opportunities to achieve it, but none truly fit what I needed, making my dream feel farther away. Until ver+ beca tech appeared in my life. Literally, an email announcing the scholarship application is what pushed me to try. After investing time and effort, I saw the results the moment I received the scholarship. ver+ beca tech is not only proof of what I’m capable of, but also evidence that dreams do come true.
